The Canadian Gaelic Athletic Association HEREINAFTER referred to as the CGAA is committed to creating and maintaining the safest possible environment for all young people and the vulnerable who wish to participate in our Gaelic Games and activities. We will take all practicable steps to protect them from discernable forms of abuse, from harm, discrimination or degrading treatment and shall respect their rights, wishes and feelings.
We do this by:
- Recognising that all children and the vulnerable have the right to be protected from harm
- Ensuring that all our coaches and volunteers are carefully recruited and selected and that they accept responsibility for ensuring the well-being of children, youth and the vulnerable in their care
- Responding swiftly and appropriately to protect the welfare of children, youth and the vulnerable who participate in our games and related activities
- Providing parents, children, youth and the vulnerable with the opportunity to voice any concerns that they may have
- Appointing Children's Officers in each of our Clubs and at County Committee level
- Ensuring that all allegations of abuse of young people and the vulnerable are confidentially dealt with in accordance with the Association's Guidelines for Dealing with Allegations of Abuse and with statutory guidelines and relevant legislation
- Reviewing the effectiveness of our Child Protection procedures and policies on an ongoing basis
Policy of the CGAA
It is the policy of the CGAA that all coaches, trainers, managers, mentors, their assistants, referees and club officials are subject to Criminal Record Checks which includes Vulnerable Sector and Sex Offender Checks.
CGAA deem Canadian Police Checks to be valid for a two year period from date of issuance and must be renewed at this point.
Any new youth coaches to the country, must provide a valid Police check from their last place of residence outside of Canada i.e. An Garda Siochana etc
No coach, trainer, manager, mentor, their assistants, referees or club officials may participate in any training session, sanctioned or unsanctioned competitions, game, tournament or related CGAA events without having submitted a Police Record Check to the CGAA.
Individuals 18 years of age and under, who assist as a coach, trainer, manager, mentor, referees or club official must be vetted. The consent of a parent/guardian is required prior to vetting persons 18 years of age or less.
The term ‘underage’ applies to any player 18 years of age and under, a player 18 years of age and under, who is a member of a Senior Team or Senior Team Panel, is still considered an underage player and needs to be treated accordingly, coaches, trainers, managers, mentors, their assistants, referees and club officials of Senior Teams and Senior Team Panels which include players 18 years of age and under, are subject to Criminal Record Checks which includes Vulnerable Sector and Sex Offender Checks.
Individuals with outstanding Criminal Code convictions or charges
Individuals with outstanding Criminal Code convictions or charges pending for certain offences shall not be eligible to hold the position of coach, trainer, manager, mentor, referees or club official.
It is the responsibility of any person required to produce a Criminal Record Check to advise the CGAA of a charge or conviction of any offence.
The CGAAs designated officer for Youth Development and Child Protection is Paula Macfarlane (hereinafter referred to as Paula) Paula is responsible for the approval of individual Criminal Record Checks
Police Record Check Process
All individuals required to provide the CGAA with a Criminal Record Check may obtain a Police Record Check through the below links to police stations in the various Cities and Provinces across Canada.

Local Police Service Clearance
Any individual wishing to use their local police services to obtain a Police Record Check should go to local Police Service in the community in which they live.
The local police service will require you to produce two pieces of identification and ask you to sign a consent form to complete the check.
Depending on the volume of Police Record Checks being processed, your local police service may take anywhere from 2-6 weeks.
Please note: Most Provinces do not charge a fee to process Police Check Applications, if your club is registered as a non-profit organisation, the applicant will be required to provide a letter (on club letterhead) when seeking a police check, stating the club non-profit number, the correspondence must also outline the applicants position i.e. volunteer/coach etc.
You will be required to pick up your Police Record Check at your local police services once the check has been completed.
Upon receipt of your Police Record Check, submit it immediately to Paula, upon receipt and review of the Police Record Check Paula will either approve or reject the applicant and notify the applicant accordingly.
CGAA Best Practices In the context of the CGAA those members, i.e. coaches, trainers, mentors, club officials, parents and others who provide services to children and vulnerable adults, on behalf of the Association, and who are in direct contact with Children, Youth or Vulnerable persons shall be vetted, no individual may put themselves forward to work with Children, Youth or Vulnerable adults prior to completing and submitting the required Police Check, and receiving the approval of the CGAA.
